THEATRE BAR DESIGN CONCEPT

A proposal for the redesign of the King’s Theatre Bar in Edinburgh to bring the playwright out of the shadows and create a space for them to gather in what is often a predominantly solitary profession. The adaptable  space would be given a daytime use as a base for playwrights to socialise, discuss and work while at night, floor to ceiling wooden slatted dividing screens are folded back to transform it into a luxurious open social space. I overcame the problem of the room being an awkward shape by dividing it with a large wooden strutted structure which runs the width of the room and neatly houses the bar itself. The varied length in wooden struts gives the overall scheme a sense of energy and dynamism. The dark atmospheric aesthetic of balancing soft natural wood and gold accents sits against the backdrop of a rich deep teal green and luxurious velvet.
