MUUTO FLAGSHIP STORE CONCEPT

Proposal for a Muuto flagship store in Edinburgh’s Fruitmarket Gallery. For this project, I gained skills in grasping the ethos of a brand and designing a space to celebrate it.

For the basis of the design I used the concept of background colour, and the effect different colours will have on the same product. Coloured, translucent thin fabric screens, dyed in varying colours feature throughout the store, dividing it in sections to allow for collections of furniture to be arranged. The colours add a new spin on the Scandi brand, providing a bright and zesty backdrop to the classic, muted products, and drawing attention to their beautiful silhouettes. The large, light and airy space is kept open and minimal to reflect the core values of the company and its heritage, while allowing physical space for the customers to move around freely and stand back to admire the products. The translucency of the fabric screens allows the customer to see vaguely what else is beyond, but requiring them to move around and explore the space fully.

The polished grey concrete, offsets the subtlety of the delicate fabric, as well as providing a clean and continuous ground in the large space, which is then filled with entirely moveable and adaptable screens and display platforms, which can be rearranged as and when new collections arrive.

The large canopied platform beside the front counter houses plinths to display the current shortlisted designs for the Muuto design competition, highlighting the fact that Muuto’s products are more than functional: they are art. The design for the store ultimately embodies Muuto’s core brand values: Modern, simple, beautiful, adaptable and clean.
