GALLERY DESIGN CONCEPT

For this project, I proposed the redesign of a historical Edinburgh church which currently houses office space into a contemporary street photography gallery. It began with a determination to be sensitive and respectful for the building and its original function as a church. My design celebrates the tremendous ceiling height, retaining the typical grandeur and airiness of a church, along with its peaceful atmosphere. The dominant feature in the scheme is the oak tunnelled staircase which descends into the basement as if it were a crypt. There is a second stair built above this one, connecting the ground floor to a mezzanine level over looking the main gallery as well as out through the gigantic front facade windows. I have produced a cohesive and legible scheme which would be a calming, elegant and refined gallery in which to display black and white street photography.
